The Printrbot Simple 3D printer comes fully assembled, has an open platform, a frame constructed of machined aluminum and laser-cut birch wood, and fabricates objects using PLA (polylactic acid) thermoplastic filament, with a vertical resolution of 100 microns (0.10 mm). The printer can build objects to maximum dimensions of 4 x 4 x 4 inches/102 x 102 x 102 mm (H x W x D). It comes with a direct drive extruder with a cooling fan, and an Ubis hot end that accepts 1.75 mm PLA filament. The printer is commanded through the provided micro USB cable using G-code numerical control instructions. An SD memory card slot can store G-Code instructions on a memory card (sold separately) for operation without a connection to a computer. It can be used with 3D printer management software packages (sold separately). The frame is made of laser-cut birch wood. Machined aluminum axis rods with linear bearings and injection molded gears help ensure precise movement. The size 17 stepper motors meet the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standard ICS 16-2001. The printer comes with a sample spool of PLA filament.

    Super cool, if not professional level It took about two hours to hack my way through the spotty documentation. The problem is that the software the printer uses isn’t owned by printrbot, and has changed since they wrote the manual. Expect to end up forum surfing to troubleshoot.Once it worked, it created tolerable looking prints. It comes out to $0.25 and half an hour per small toy ($.033/g). Perhaps when I learn to calibrate it, things will be a bit more crisp and precise. But, good enough for me! I use this…

    A hard print but good I would give it 5 stars but the manufacturer didn’t mention a couple of gotchas. 1-The printer comes with a printed sample which has to be removed before using the printer. 2-The software used in the help files is out of date and the item has a fan which is not addressed.     Documentation NOT good, but even I got it running I love this machine, even though it has created an all-consuming 3D printing passion in me! Set-up was very frustrating due to small yet show-stopping things not mentioned in documentation from Printrbot. First, remove the sample from the plate and a panel of plywood along the side of the long “arm” before you do anything else.
